Dog Bites Need Medical Evaluation and the Incident Reported To Authorities

May 15th, 2012

National Dog Bite Prevention Week is the third full week of May. This is a good time to become educated on different ways to prevent dog bites. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and the U.S. Postal Service are running informational campaigns on dog bite prevention in the hopes that education and attention on the problem will help to reduce the number of reported dog bites per year.

Dog Bites Affect 4.7 Million People Every Year

The CDC reports that more than 4.7 million people fall victim to a dog bite each year. Out of that number over 800,000 people receive medical treatment, with about 400,000 of these cases children. Injuries vary in severity, with over 390,000 needing treatment in an emergency room, and with at least 16 victims of a dog bite who die from their wounds; these are yearly averages.

Dog Bite Injuries Leave Emotional And Physical Scars

Dog bite injuries need to be taken seriously. Small children may have significant tearing and bite puncture wounds to their head and neck. The elderly may not be able to fend off an attack and therefore receive injuries not only from the dog bite attack, but from the subsequent fall and mauling. Thousands of victims of a dog bite attack require reconstructive or plastic surgery. An attack and dog bite or mauling may leave emotional as well as physical scars. Call our Georgia dog bite doctors for a free evaluation and treatment. You should receive medical attention immediately following a dog bite.

What To Do If You Receive A Dog Bite

If you have been bitten by a dog, try to determine who the owner of the dog is, or if you think it was a stray. Finding out how to locate the dog later is important in the treatment planning for your medical care. Clean the wound as soon as possible with soap and water or either antiseptic or antibacterial lotion. If there are deep wounds try not to disturb the exposed tissues by rubbing or pulling the wound open for cleaning. Seek medical treatment as soon as you can. Our Georgia dog bite doctors are a phone call away.

It is important to report your dog bite and wounds to the proper authorities such as your local Georgia animal control agency.  While you are receiving your medical treatment and care with the Georgia dog bite doctors, they can assist you with notification of the dog bite and injury. No one wants to become a victim of a dog bite, however, if you are one of the millions who suffer a dog bite every year, it is good to know that Georgia doctors specializing in the care and treatment of dog bites are just a phone call away and they can provide the proper paperwork needed should you decide to take legal action.

Actos Medication Linked to Increased Risk of Bladder Cancer

April 30th, 2012

Actos, a prescription medication that is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes has been linked to a significant increased risk of developing bladder cancer. Actos prescriptions may be listed under the generic name of Pioglitazone. This medication works by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin, which in turn helps to control blood glucose levels.

FDA Warns About Use Of Actos

A prescription for Actos or Pioglitazone may be sold as a singular medication, or it may be combined with other medications such as Metformin or Glimepiride and labeled as Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met XR, or Duetact. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that over 2.3 million prescriptions for either the brand name or generic name of this medication have been filled in one year’s time.

According to a US News Health Day report, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has placed a warning on Actos or Pioglitazone, stating that if these medications are used for more than a year there is a 40% risk of developing bladder cancer. While Actos was a commonly prescribed medication the risk for bladder cancer cannot be ignored when the medication is taken on a long term basis.

What Are The Symptoms Of Bladder Cancer?

The most common symptoms of bladder cancer can include pain during urination, having to urinate frequently but only in small amounts, having recurring urinary tract infections and having blood or even blood clots in the urine. Having blood in your urine may not mean that you have bladder cancer, but it appears in at least 80% of the people who do have bladder cancer. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and have taken Actos, call your Atlanta physicians for free medical evaluation and treatment.

Additional symptoms that may occur with the development and spread of bladder cancer include experiencing pain in the lower back, leg swelling or edema, weight loss, pain in the pelvic or rectal area, bone pain or the discovery of a growth or lump in the pelvic area.

If you have one or several of the symptoms of bladder cancer it is urgent to receive expert medical evaluation and treatment early. Bladder cancer can spread and become deadly if treatment and specialized care are not provided in the early stages. With a diagnosis, treatment and care can be started immediately. Call our network of Georgia doctors today for a medical consultation.

March 30th, 2012

Protecting and caring for our infants and children are major concerns for parents and guardians. Almost 4-million Bumbo seats have been sold in the U.S. in the last 10-years, but consumer groups are trying to get the Bumbo seat taken off the market. There is a risk for infants to fall out of these seats and receive injury. Numerous injury reports are on record that includes concussions and skull fractures.

Georgia and North Florida Network of Infant Injury Doctors

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has addressed the risk several times and has called for a Bumbo seat recall several times. In the last several years there have been over 100 reported injuries with dozens of diagnosed skull fractures. The infants who sustained these serious injuries fell out of the seat from both elevated surfaces, such as a seat on the table, and fell out of the seat which was placed on the floor. Infant falls require immediate medical attention as the injury may be internal and not apparent to the eye.
